Little Mouse’s Sweet Treat, by Shana Hollowell, is a children’s picture book about Little Mouse’s quest to find a sweet treat to eat. This is also a rhyming book. It is illustrated by Jennifer Finch, who hand painted the illustrations in watercolor. The author’s love of animals and nature shows through in this story’s plot and illustrations.
Little Mouse craves something sweet, so he visits his animal neighbors, asking for something sweet to eat. Little Mouse’s neighbors offer him their favorite treats to eat, but Little Mouse does not want what they have. When he finally goes home, Little Mouse’s mother has a sweet treat for him.
On Amazon, this book is listed for the age group, babies to five-year-olds. I tested this story out on a seven-year-old girl, who loves picture books. She read half of the story and I read the rest to her. She noticed right away that this was a rhyming story. She noticed the illustrations were painted. She also noticed the snail. My adult eyes glanced over it, because it seemed to blend so well into the nature scenes. There is a snail following Little Mouse throughout the whole story. Look for it. She expected Little Mouse to become Cat’s sweet treat, but in this story, all of the animals are friendly. She said she enjoyed the story and the pictures. Even though this seven-year-old girl is above the intended age group, she still enjoyed this picture book. Therefore, I recommend Little Mouse’s Sweet Treat for any child, who enjoys reading picture books and/or rhyming books.
As an adult, Little Mouse’s Sweet Treat was enjoyable to read. The illustrations were soft, pleasant, and calming as one would imagine a natural setting with lots of animals to be. One of the links below leads to Shana Hollowell’s site, where there is a short biography, describing her love of animals and nature. Both wild and domesticated animals are represented in this story as characters. Given Hollowell’s many pets, the abundance of animals in the story makes sense. This book should also appeal to children, who love animals, nature, being outdoors, and helping their parents bake treats to eat as a family activity.
This is a good story for children and adults to read any time. Since this story has calm, nature scenes, this book can serve well as a bedtime story even though it is not about a character’s going to bed. I recommend this book to day care providers, babysitters, parents, and teachers. If you are an adult, looking for a children’s book to set a calm, quiet mood for your child, children, or class, I highly recommend this book.

Thank you so much for this wonderful review! ❤️🐭🍪 Shana
You are welcome. I enjoy reading picture books to kids. I know how hard it is for a parent to find books for their kids’ reading logs that they will read and enjoy, so I will regularly re-post links to the book reviews on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter with your book cover until you say stop. Good luck.
