Book Review: Hug Machine

By | October 31, 2017

Hug Machine is a picture book, written and illustrated by Scott Campbell. The children’s book is about a little boy, who loves to give hugs. This is a silly book that should make your child smile.

The boy can hug almost everything. People are not the only things that this little boy hugs throughout the book. The boy hugged animals, plants, an inanimate objects. He hugged a porcupine and a whale in very unique, funny, and appropriate ways.

The book gives examples of different reasons why someone might need a hug. A person may need a hug when he or she is upset, sad, crying, or exhausted. Hugs can make a person feel better. The little boy’s hugging of things in nature like a rock, a tree, or snake can show little kids to love and preserve the natural environment for all living things to enjoy. The little boy’s hugging of inanimate objects like a mailbox or park bench shows little kids to be socially responsible and to care about the world they share with others. This book, Hug Machine, displays several positive messages for both children and adults to possess.

In the beginning of the book there are blank check boxes. In the end of the book, the check boxes have been checked for all of the hugs accomplished throughout the book. The first people the boy hugged appeared to be his mother, father, and big sister. Although they are not identified as such. At the end of the book, the woman from the third and fourth pages gave him a hug, because he was tired from a long day of hugging people, animals, and inanimate objects. Hugging is the little boy’s professional job and it’s a lot of hard work. However, giving hugs made the little boy feel better, too.

I showed the e-book to a six-year-old girl and a four-year-old boy. The two kids were not as excited about this book as I was. It was not a book that they wanted to see over and over again, but as an adult, I loved this book. This e-book came with narration from OverDrive Read. Therefore, if a child doesn’t know how to read yet, you can borrow this e-book from OverDrive with your local library card number. You can allow the e-book to read aloud to your child or children. However, you have to make sure your local library offers OverDrive loans for their library patrons. You can also borrow a printed copy of this book or buy it.

I recommend this book for any parent and/or beginning reader, who needs to complete a reading log for school or to read just for pleasure. This book can be used by teachers for reading time to teach emotional intelligence to small children. Hug Machine is a fun book with a positive message.
