Book Review: Sheltered, Volume 1

By | October 7, 2016

Sheltered: A Pre-Apocalyptic Tale, Volume 1, by Ed Brisson, Johnnie Christmas, and Shari Chankhamma, jumps into action with a conspiracy among the teenagers under the control of a charismatic leader to kill their parents at a preppers’ colony. The new girl, Victoria, arrived at the compound right before the mass murders took place. Therefore, the leader of the conspiracy has no influence over her and her strength of mind threatens his control over the other teenagers.

This comic book has multiple volumes. Volume one of this comic book ends in a cliff-hanger like a season finale of a television show. Don’t jump to the end or you will miss the reasons why and how the story got to that point. Interpreting the pictures and reading the dialogue goes by very quickly. It feels like you are watching action scenes in a movie. I think Sheltered can convert very well to a television movie or motion picture.

I am not a comic book person, so I am surprised that I enjoyed this one. There are no superheroes with extraterrestrial origins, no god for a parent, no accident that altered a person’s DNA, no identity concealing costumes, and no abundance of wealth. This comic involves ordinary people trying to survive a criminal threat. If you enjoy action and psychological thrillers on television and in motion pictures, you will enjoy this comic book.
