Attention all science and technology enthusiasts, hobbyists, artisans, artists, engineers, teachers, professors, students, and science clubs. The main branch of the Los Angeles Public Library is hosting the DTLA Mini Maker Faire at its downtown Los Angeles location on Saturday, December 2, 2017, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event is free to the public, but that’s not the real news.
The real news is that you have until Saturday, October 28, 2017 to apply as a maker exhibiter, a workshop presenter, or a presenter of a lecture or performance about a project. The application to apply as a maker to show off your inventions, discoveries, projects, skills, or some other creation is online. There are links to relevant sites below. Even if you don’t have the project or creation completed, you need to upload an image of the prototype for your maker project.
The LAPL’s announcement for this event came out on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 via the Los Angeles Public Library’s website. This gives no real opportunity to participate for people, who have been thinking about a science, technology, craft, or artistic project for a while, but hasn’t acted upon producing it yet. However, schools, teachers, parents, individual students, student groups, and self-taught thinkers at home can attend for free this year and check out the competition for participating next year.
This would be a great event for teachers, parents, students, thinkers, and hobbyists to gain motivation to complete or initiate your projects for next year’s DTLA Mini Maker Faire at the Central Library Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library in 2018.
The tone of the Mini Maker Faire appears to be dominated by science and technology, but anyone, who makes things can participate. On one page for the DTLA Mini Maker Faire website, homesteader crafts, hacks, music performances, video and film productions, textiles, arts, crafts, food science, brewing technology, industrial designs, fashion designs, glass, and ceramics are welcome alongside any science, electronic, and technology projects. Blogs and vlogs on DIY projects and hacks to make your life easier are pretty popular online, but those bloggers and vloggers can gain more subscribers by attending this event as a maker by presenting a how-to workshop, for example. The list included musicians, videographers, and filmmakers as makers, but I don’t see dancers on the list. Dance groups should contact the LAPL to inquire if dance performances can be presented. You can find a link to that page below.
I have never heard about this event ever happening before. I am disappointed that the call for makers was not posted during the summer, at the very least, so that parents, students, and self-taught thinkers and hobbyists could have prepared. It takes money to make things and not everyone has it just sitting around to spend on a prototype. If you are disappointed as I am in not having enough time to prepare and participate, we can attend this year, check out the competition, bring the kids, and spend a year preparing for the next one in 2018.
Remember, you must register for participation in the DTLA Mini Maker Faire by this Saturday, October 28, 2017 with an image uploaded for your project or prototype, but the event will take place on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at the Central Library Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at 630 West 5th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90071. A link will be provided below to register at Eventbrite to obtain free tickets to attend the event.
If you can avoid driving to the event, use the trains. Going anywhere in downtown Los Angeles is painful. Searching for parking is time-consuming. Actually finding a parking spot is expensive.
Good luck. Have fun. If you can only attend this year, pick up some books while you are there to help you make your project for next year’s DTLA Mini Maker Faire.
